Are you passionate about issues of food and social justice? Would you like to gain experience in audio, visual, or written forms of storytelling? Are you interested in organizing with other youth to make positive change in the world, and having fun in the process?
The Center for Regional Food Studies (CRFS) at the University of Arizona invites applicants for a semester-long paid internship with “The Future of Food and Social Justice Youth Storytelling Lab”. The specific themes of this year’s lab are water and racial justice.
CRFS will select a cohort of 6-8 interns to participate in this unique opportunity which includes training in multiple aspects of storytelling, organizing around local and regional environmental justice issues, and collecting and documenting stories for disseminating to scholars, practitioners, and students’ communities through blogs, podcasts, printed publications, and various creative forms of storytelling. Interns will be matched with mentors and also engage in peer mentoring circles.
Compensation:
- $500 for participation during the Spring 2025 semester
- Students will receive 3 units of credit by enrolling in FOOD 393 Internship course
Expectations:
- Attend Spring 2025 semester retreat (2 hours, to be scheduled in early January)
- Attend and participate in storytelling workshop series (three 2-hour workshops in Spring 2025 – dates TBD)
- Attend 2 meetings during Spring 2025 semester with student cohort and lab supervisors
- Carry out independent research during the Spring 2025 semester
- Meet regularly with your assigned mentor to develop and polish your stories
- Compose at least one story for dissemination and/or publication by end of Spring 2025 semester
Eligibility:
- Currently enrolled undergraduates at UA main campus (must be enrolled through Spring 2025)
- QT BIPOC (queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, and people of color) and/or students from southern Arizona are especially encouraged to apply
