Food Justice is more than Growing Food and Feeding People
In this public talk, Karen Washington will discuss how food justice refers to more than just transforming how we grow food and feed people. She describes how notions of food security that revolve solely around changes to how people grow food, eat, and exercise fall short of creating lasting change in the food system.

Since 1985, Karen Washington has been a community activist, striving to make New York City a better place to live. Through collaboration with various garden coalitions and organizations, she has worked to turn empty lots into community gardens in the Bronx, protect and preserve garden spaces, launch a City Farms Market to bring fresh vegetables to the community, and has led workshops on growing food and food justice across the country. In 2010, Karen co-founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization that supports growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 she received the James Beard Leadership Award. Since retiring from Physical Therapy in 2014, Karen is co-owner/farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester New York.

The Dunbar Pavilion is located at 325 W 2nd Street, on the southeast corner of Main and 2nd St. Please note that the parking lot is located on the south side of the building off of Main Ave (between Dunbar and Holy Family Church). Walk through the purple gates in the lower lot, and the Auditorium (location of public talk event) is to the left.
